Cemetery and Garden of Remembrance

Groby Parish Council act as the burial authority for Groby Village Cemetery. The Council prides itself in managing and maintaining an essential amenity.

The Cemetery is a place of rest for both grave and cremation interments and is an amenity provided by the Council for the benefit and use of the inhabitants of the Parish. The Exclusive Right of Burial is solely for the use of people who at the date of death were ordinarily residents in the Parish of Groby. However, if the deceased has recently moved away through illness or for nursing home care, they may (at the discretion of the Parish Council) be buried in Groby Cemetery.

Ashes, including those of non-Groby residents, can be scattered within The Garden of Remembrance. The scattering of ashes in this area does not convey any Exclusive Right of Burial.

The Council endeavours to ensure that the Cemetery is managed as an area of tranquility for remembrance of the people whose remains have been placed here. We seek to have a generally harmonious appearance for the whole Cemetery and to avoid the placing on graves of unusual or inappropriate items that appear out of keeping with the overall state of the Cemetery.

Opening times.

The cemetery is open daily. The car park gates are open from 8.00am to 4.30pm from October to March and from 8.00am to 8.00pm April to September. Pedestrian access is unrestricted.

The cemetery car park is for the use of visitors to the cemetery only. Unauthorised parking may be subject to wheel-clamping. All persons visiting the cemetery should act in a responsible manner whilst in the grounds.

Groby Parish Council has created a “Garden of Remembrance” where the cremated remains of residents and non-residents of Groby may be strewed . Although not consecrated, the garden is dedicated to the dead of all religions and non-believers. – photo galley click here and chose Groby Village Cemetery.

Garden of Remembrance

Bereaved people can visit this garden for some quiet solace and contemplation, memorials in the form of plaques, trees and rose planting are available

The passing of close relatives or friends is always a time of sorrow and stress, but within the quiet and peaceful grounds of Groby Village Cemetery, everything has been done to make the occasion as reverent, as consoling and as respectful as possible.

The cremated remains may be strewn in one of the four designated areas within the Garden of Remembrance – “Tranquillity”, “Eternity”, “Peace” or “Serenity”.

The ashes are not allowed to be scattered in one solid mass on the ground and should be scattered evenly, then covered with light soil and aggregate shortly after the strewing to help preserve the beauty of the strewing area and encourage the remains to return to the earth.

The area in which the cremated remains are strewn is then recorded in the register for future reference. It is important to consider that once scattering has taken place cremated remains cannot be removed, individually located, or marked within the scattering areas. Cremated remains scattered in the Gardens of Remembrance are not contained in a casket or urn, and only a general location is recorded.

An appointment can be arranged for a mutually convenient date and time to allow relatives to attend and witness the final disposal of the cremated remains within the Garden of Remembrance, (Monday to Friday).FEES Service Request form

Should the relatives desire, a minister may be engaged to read a short form of service. This would be arranged by and at the expense of the applicant.

No memorials will be permitted in the area where the strewing has taken place, although floral tributes can be left in the floral tribute area. . At Christmas we leave Christmas wreaths until the last day in January when the grounds are cleared.
